Chalmers researchers map high rate of empty container truck trips
Research from Chalmers University of Technology reveals that nearly half of all container trucks in Sweden operate empty, prompting the development of new models to improve logistical efficiency.
Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology have identified that approximately 50 percent of container truck journeys in Sweden are conducted without cargo. This high rate of empty travel contributes significantly to both operational costs and environmental impact within the national transport sector.
The team has developed new calculation models designed to provide granular data on transport patterns. By analyzing current travel data, these models offer actionable insights that allow logistics operators to optimize routes and improve cargo consolidation, aiming to reduce the frequency of unproductive journeys.
With road traffic remaining the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions within the global transport sector—which accounted for 15 percent of total global emissions in 2019—the study highlights the urgent need for systemic improvements. The research provides a foundation for industry stakeholders to address logistical inefficiencies and curb emissions in heavy-duty freight transport.
