Chalmers University of Technology Awarded for Digital Twin Research

Chalmers University of Technology has received an award for its development of digital twins designed to connect research with practical application in urban planning and construction. The Digital Twin Cities Centre (DTCC) is at the forefront of this initiative.

A digital twin is a virtual replica of a physical entity, updated with real-time data. At DTCC, this technology is applied to urban environments, enabling the simulation and testing of various development solutions before implementation. The model encompasses existing urban structures, planning processes, and construction phases.

"The ideal is for the model to be alive," stated Anders Logg, Professor at the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Director of DTCC. "You can see what the city looks like right now and how its different parts are connected." The center facilitates collaboration between 35 partners from academia, the public sector, and industry, leveraging interdisciplinary expertise to tackle complex urban challenges.

DTCC evolved from previous projects on virtual cities and urban development. Despite challenges, including its initiation during the COVID-19 pandemic, the center has secured further funding and demonstrated significant progress. The recipients highlight the collaborative nature of DTCC, emphasizing the fusion of long-term research with practical use cases for sustainable urban futures.
