Changan Automobile and CATL Launch New Sodium Battery Swapping Technology Project
Changan Automobile and CATL have initiated a project for new sodium-ion battery swapping technology. The companies aim to develop new battery systems and improve electric vehicle performance in cold conditions.
Chinese automaker Changan Automobile announced on September 24 that it has launched a project focused on new sodium-ion battery swapping technology in collaboration with battery manufacturer CATL. This initiative aims to develop novel battery systems and address the performance challenges of electric vehicles in extreme temperatures.
Changan Automobile has reported phased progress in the field of sodium-ion batteries, including improvements in power and durability in cold weather. The deepening collaboration with CATL, marked by the initiation of this new battery swapping technology project, represents a significant step towards the commercialization of next-generation battery technologies.
CATL previously unveiled its "Naxin" brand, the world's first sodium-ion battery for mass production, last year. These batteries are engineered to operate across a wide temperature range, from -40°C to +70°C, promising substantial improvements in electric vehicle range, particularly in cold climates.
Performance in frigid conditions has been a significant hurdle for electric vehicles. CATL claims that Naxin batteries can provide over 200 km of electric range for hybrid vehicles and over 500 km for pure electric vehicles in extreme frost, potentially solving daily commuting and travel needs in cold regions.
Changan Automobile's announcement underscores its commitment to advancing battery technology and maintaining competitiveness in the evolving electric vehicle market. Sodium-ion batteries could also offer cost advantages and improve material availability compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries.
