Charles River Laboratories has agreed to sell five European drug discovery facilities to IQVIA for approximately $145 million. The divested assets include capabilities in medicinal chemistry, structural biology, and in vitro pharmacology.

The move is a strategic choice by Charles River to refocus capital and talent on areas of higher scientific differentiation. This follows earlier divestitures of CDMO and Cell Solutions businesses, totaling roughly $287 million in expected 2025 revenue reduction.

For IQVIA, the acquisition enhances its position as an end-to-end partner in drug research and development. As pharmaceutical companies increasingly streamline outsourcing relationships, integrated service providers gain a competitive advantage.

Market research firm Maximize Market Research notes that specialization, not scale, is emerging as a key differentiator for contract research organizations (CROs). This transaction exemplifies the trend. Companies that adapt to these market shifts will define the future landscape of pharmaceutical outsourcing.
