Charter Space raises $5M for space insurance

Charter Space, a startup specializing in space insurance, has secured $5 million in seed funding to fuel its continued growth. The company, a finalist in last year's TechCrunch Startup Battlefield, aims to make insurance more accessible for the burgeoning space sector.

The El Segundo, California-based firm announced Wednesday that it is already serving over 50 companies within the U.S. space and defense industrial base. Charter Space launched its nationally licensed insurance brokerage in May, targeting a market often underserved by traditional insurers.

The funding round was led by Crystal Venture Partners, an investment firm with a focus on the insurance sector. Other participants included fintech investors QED and Blank Ventures, early-stage venture firm Hustle Fund, and Gaingels, an investment syndicate supporting startups with underrepresented leadership.

Given the inherent risks and complexities of space operations, companies frequently face challenges securing adequate insurance coverage. Charter Space's founder and CEO, Yuk Chi Chan, cited the high cost of underwriting and the reluctance of conventional insurers to engage with the intricacies of space missions as key barriers the company seeks to address.
