ChatGPT and Reddit to comply with tougher EU online safety rules

The European Commission announced on Monday that OpenAI's ChatGPT, the Reddit discussion forum, and the Roblox gaming platform have been designated as very large online platforms under the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA). This classification imposes new obligations on these services, including the removal of illegal content and the protection of minors' privacy and security.

The new rules are part of the EU's efforts to regulate rapidly evolving AI services and other online platforms. The DSA is the EU's landmark online safety legislation, aiming to create a safer online environment for users. Failure to remove illegal content or comply with other obligations could result in fines of up to 6 percent of global revenue.

The designation of "very large online platform" applies to services with at least 45 million monthly active users in the EU. Consequently, ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox must now adhere to stricter requirements than smaller platforms. This move underscores the EU's commitment to addressing the content and impact of digital services, particularly concerning advanced technologies like AI.

The Commission aims to ensure these major platforms operate more responsibly and better protect their users from illegal and harmful content. The regulation specifically targets the fight against hate speech, disinformation, and other illicit material online.
