OpenAI is expanding the capabilities of its conversational AI assistant, ChatGPT, with new e-commerce-focused features aimed at enhancing the online shopping experience. The company announced on Thursday the global rollout of two new functionalities.

The most notable of these is a virtual try-on feature for clothing and accessories. This allows users to upload their own photos, either selfies or full-body images, to visualize how specific garments or accessories might appear on them. The feature utilizes OpenAI's newly launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which the company claims offers more natural lighting, richer textures, and improved image generation speed.

Users can also upload an image of a product, such as a web screenshot, and request ChatGPT to virtually try it on for them. Another new option is a "Favorites" function, enabling users to save discovered products to an in-app library for later reference. These saved items will be stored alongside their virtual try-on images.

OpenAI suggests ChatGPT can assist with shopping in other ways as well. For instance, users can describe a style they wish to adopt and ask the assistant to shop for the pieces needed to complete the look. They can also upload photos of celebrity outfits and request ChatGPT to find similar purchasable items.

These new features position ChatGPT in competition with platforms like Pinterest and Google, which have been primary sources for fashion inspiration and driving sales for online retailers. It remains to be seen if ChatGPT will become a go-to tool for such activities.
