Chinese automaker Chery is gearing up for a significant expansion in the United Kingdom, planning to launch four new or updated SUV models in the coming year. The company will also establish a research and development center within the UK, marking a strategic move to enhance its market penetration.

Chery UK Managing Director Farrell Hsu indicated that the company aims to compete with established brands by offering mainstream vehicles. A key part of this strategy involves expanding its product line. The upcoming Tiggo X SUV, a seven-seat plug-in hybrid, is slated to be among the new offerings. This model features a substantial power output and a pure electric range of 200km (CLTC), positioning it as Chery's new flagship.

The new R&D center, located at the UTAC Millbrook test facility in Bedfordshire, will initially function as a "translation center." Its primary role will be to convert feedback from UK consumers and media into actionable development requirements for Chery's engineers in China. This initiative aims to fine-tune vehicle dynamics, including steering, chassis tuning, and advanced driver-assistance systems, to better suit British road conditions.

Hsu expressed a desire to emulate the driving dynamics of German competitors. "Many people like the feel of German cars, they like that driving feel," he stated, emphasizing Chery's commitment to learning from and adapting to the preferences of the UK market. The company is also exploring the possibility of making plug-in hybrid systems standard across its entire model range.

Chery has already sold approximately 29,000 vehicles in the UK since entering the market. The establishment of the R&D center and the planned introduction of new models signal Chery's long-term commitment to growing its market share and enhancing its brand reputation in the competitive European automotive landscape.
