China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) approved 42 innovative medical devices for market in the first half of 2024. Among these approvals are several "world-first" products, such as the first implantable brain-computer interface medical device and the first self-expanding, single-rivet, bioresorbable atrial septal defect occluder. These advancements aim to address clinical needs for Chinese patients while also offering global solutions.

Alongside the medical device approvals, the NMPA authorized 38 new innovative drug applications. This total includes 20 chemical drugs, 17 biologics, and one traditional Chinese medicine. Notably, 11 of these drugs target novel pathways and mechanisms, and all were independently developed by Chinese companies. This rise in domestic innovation reflects a strategic shift towards strengthening local research and development capabilities.

On the international front, Chinese pharmaceutical companies reported substantial growth in overseas licensing deals. In the first half of the year, 81 such agreements were signed, totaling approximately $110 billion USD. This figure represents 80% of the total value for the entire previous year and covers ten therapeutic areas, including oncology, metabolism, and immunology.

The NMPA highlighted that China is currently developing approximately 30% of the world's pipeline of new drugs, ranking second globally. The country's pharmaceutical industry is observing a continuous increase in clinical trial numbers, indicating robust innovation activity and a maturing research and development landscape.
