China clean technology exports hit record highs in 2026

China's exports of renewable energy technology, including solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicles, reached record levels in the first nine months of 2026. Data from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) indicates that energy supply insecurities stemming from the conflict in Iran have accelerated global demand for alternatives to fossil fuels.

Export growth has been robust across sectors, with electric vehicle shipments rising 61% and wind turbine exports increasing 45% compared to the previous year. Southeast Asia has emerged as a primary market, with regional imports of clean tech jumping nearly 160% as nations like Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines pursue policies to reduce dependency on volatile energy imports.

While independent experts note that the environmental impact is difficult to verify with precision, CREA estimates that the clean technology exported by China this year could prevent roughly 8.4 billion metric tons of CO2 over its total operational lifespan. Analysts emphasize that while this growth is significant, China remains the world's leading source of carbon emissions, making its own domestic transition essential to global climate progress.
