China delivers Mazu meteorological warning system to Sri Lanka

The China Meteorological Administration has delivered a specialized 'Mazu' intelligent weather warning unit to Sri Lanka to improve disaster forecasting capabilities.

1 November 2026

The China Meteorological Administration delivered a customized 'Mazu' intelligent weather monitoring and warning system to Sri Lanka during the World Mazu Culture Forum. The hardware deployment marks a key step in a project designed to address gaps in Sri Lanka's ability to monitor severe weather, including heavy rainfall and cyclones.

The system integrates cloud-based early warning capabilities with on-site hardware to overcome local limitations in internet connectivity and computing power. It is specifically designed to provide multi-level alerts for various sectors, including aviation, agriculture, and maritime operations.

Originally launched in late 2025 under the guidance of the China Meteorological Administration and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the project is currently in the integration phase. Full operational status is expected by the end of 2026. As of October 2026, the Mazu system has been implemented in eight countries, including Pakistan and Ethiopia, as part of China’s broader initiative to provide weather-related public services globally.
