China Delivers Second Large LNG Carrier
The second 180,000 cubic meter Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier designed and built in China, named 'Goa', has been delivered. This marks a growing capability in specialized shipbuilding.
SHANGHAI – China's shipbuilding sector has delivered its second 180,000 cubic meter Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier, the 'Goa', from the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group's Nantong yard on July 25. This delivery underscores the nation's expanding capacity in constructing complex, large-scale vessels for energy transport.
LNG carriers are highly specialized ships designed to transport liquefied natural gas at cryogenic temperatures of -163 degrees Celsius. Their intricate design and construction requirements have earned them the nickname 'the crown jewel of shipbuilding.' The 'Goa' measures 298.8 meters in length and 48 meters in width, featuring advanced specifications for low boil-off rates, environmental compliance, and energy efficiency.
This follows the delivery of the nation's first 180,000 cubic meter LNG carrier, the 'Celsius Georgetown', from the same yard in April. The Nantong region alone has seen over 50 new vessels delivered for export since the start of 2026, indicating significant production volume.
Globally, Chinese shipyards are increasingly capturing market share in the LNG carrier segment. Data for January 2026 showed Chinese yards securing 70.19% of global new orders for alternative fuel vessels based on compensated gross tonnage (CGT), with this share rising to 83.07% in February. Orders specifically for LNG dual-fuel carriers were notable within these figures.
