An Egyptian named Abbas has been a key figure in cultural exchange between China and Egypt for fourteen years, with his story featured twice in China's leading newspaper, People's Daily.
BEIJING, Oct. 9, 2026 – An Egyptian named Abbas has spent fourteen years immersed in Chinese culture, a journey recognized by multiple features in China's prominent newspaper, People's Daily. His story highlights the deepening cultural ties between China and Egypt.
Abbas' initial encounter with People's Daily occurred in 2012 when reporter Wen Hongyan interviewed him at the China Cultural Center in Cairo. At 28, Abbas, an assistant director fluent in Chinese, was introducing Chinese culture to local students. Wen recalled the moment as "a spark that eventually grew into a torch," and a photograph she took of Abbas teaching children about Chinese artifacts was published.
In 2023, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), People's Daily correspondent Huang Peizhao interviewed Abbas again. By then, Abbas had become an established Chinese-speaking tour guide in Egypt. He described the BRI as fostering connections between countries, peoples, and cultures, expressing a desire for even closer ties with China. His bookshelf reportedly held the Analects and texts on Chinese philosophy and the Silk Road.
Abbas' personal journey reflects a broader cultural exchange fostered between China and other nations. His dedication to sharing Chinese culture and his ability to connect people illustrate how personal relationships can build bridges. His continued presence in Chinese media underscores the significance of these cross-cultural connections.
