China Introduces Plan to Boost Smart Home Consumer Spending
Multiple Chinese ministries have released a plan to promote smart home consumption, including financial support, standardization efforts, and incentives for product upgrades.

China's Ministry of Commerce, alongside seven other government departments, has released a new action plan aimed at stimulating consumer spending on smart home products. The initiative outlines strategies to encourage financial institutions to develop diverse consumer finance products and services supporting smart home purchases. The plan also intends to leverage existing fiscal interest subsidies for personal consumption loans to guide financial institutions in increasing support for smart home acquisitions.
The plan emphasizes improving the standardization of smart home products. This includes refining the classification system for product intelligence levels and expediting the implementation of mandatory national standards for aspects such as smart home interoperability. The goal is to accelerate the integrated development of whole-home smart solutions. Efforts will also be made to promote wider adoption of IPv6 in home broadband networks and to establish basic smart product requirements for newly built, fully furnished residential properties.
Further measures include encouraging manufacturers to enhance research and development of smart home products and supporting the establishment of smart home experience centers by retailers. The plan also specifically addresses the development of age-friendly smart home products and the improvement of recycling services for old appliances. These steps aim to cater to the needs of various consumer groups and foster sustainable growth in the sector.
Financial incentives are a key component. Institutions are encouraged to create financing options tailored to home renovation and furnishing needs. Additionally, the plan suggests exploring subsidies for upgrading to new smart home products, thereby promoting a circular economy. Overall, the initiative seeks to create a favorable ecosystem for the proliferation of smart home technology across China.
