A facility in Huantai County, Zibo, has initiated trial operations of China’s first intelligent production line for hydrogen sealing materials. While the site has not yet reached full-scale mass production, the company reports it has already secured orders for nearly 10,000 units of its third-generation hydrogen gaskets from domestic and international electrolyzer manufacturers.

The development addresses a critical vulnerability in hydrogen infrastructure. Because hydrogen molecules are highly permeable, seals act as essential safety barriers. Historically, the Chinese market has relied on imported materials, as manual production methods often struggled to maintain the necessary consistency and precision required for hydrogen safety.

To bridge this technical gap, local developers spent three years engineering new material formulas and automated manufacturing processes. The new line replaces manual assembly with automated systems, which the manufacturer states produces gaskets with improved resilience and low creep, potentially extending the operational lifespan of electrolyzers to 10 years.

The industry is moving toward greater standardization as the sector scales. The company responsible for this technology has been selected by the National Energy Administration as a lead participant in drafting the forthcoming industry standard for hydrogen pressure equipment sealing technology.
