China leads, world's first solid-state battery standard for EVs established
A global standard for solid-state batteries in electric vehicles, proposed by China, has been successfully established at the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is the first international standard in the field.
China has successfully established the world's first international standard for solid-state batteries intended for electric vehicle propulsion. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) approved the proposal titled "Secondary lithium-ion cells for the propulsion of electric road vehicles – Application guide, test items and conditions for solid-state batteries." Solid-state batteries are considered a key development direction for next-generation lithium-ion batteries, offering longer range, enhanced safety, and more stable performance compared to traditional liquid electrolyte batteries.
The new standard, spearheaded by China, will provide clear testing specifications for solid-state batteries. This international benchmark is expected to offer a unified "yardstick" for global automotive manufacturers in the development and production of these advanced batteries. The initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of safer electric vehicles with extended range and to drive the rapid growth of the renewable energy industry.
Experts from multiple countries, including France, South Korea, and Japan, collaborated with China in developing the standard. This international cooperation facilitates the sharing of China's advanced battery technology concepts globally, contributing to the technological upgrade and energy transition within the worldwide battery industry.
