China plans digital IDs for end-of-life EV batteries

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) plans to establish administrative regulations for retired electric vehicle (EV) batteries. A key component of this initiative will be the introduction of a digital identity system designed to trace batteries throughout their lifecycle, from manufacturing and usage to recycling.

Vice Minister Xin Guobin announced on August 26 that the ministry will also conduct joint enforcement campaigns. These campaigns aim to regulate battery recycling processes and enhance the traceability of battery materials.

The initiative aligns with China's broader environmental goals. The country aims to achieve comprehensive utilization of over one million metric tons of retired power batteries by 2030. This digital tracking system is expected to support these targets by improving management and accountability in the battery supply chain.
