China Publishes Mandatory L3/L4 Autonomous Driving Standard
China has released the final text of its first mandatory national safety standard for L3 and L4 automated driving systems. The standard is set to take effect on July 1, 2027.
China has finalized and published its first mandatory national safety standard for Level 3 and Level 4 automated driving systems. The new standard, GB 44721-2026, outlines requirements for dynamic driving tasks, human-machine interaction, user notices, safety assurance, and remote assistance.
The regulation applies to passenger and freight vehicles equipped with L3 or L4 autonomous systems. It is scheduled to become effective on July 1, 2027, replacing the previous recommended standard from 2024. This move provides a common set of requirements for automakers and suppliers developing higher-level driving features.
This national standard aims to ensure safety and consistency in the rapidly developing autonomous vehicle sector in China. It is expected to accelerate the adoption of advanced driver-assistance systems by establishing clear technical guidelines for manufacturers.
