China Railway, the national rail operator, has announced a comprehensive reform of its train numbering system, scheduled to be implemented in two phases starting late November. The changes aim to provide passengers and freight customers with more intuitive information about train services.

The current numbering system has faced challenges, particularly during peak travel periods, where high-speed 'G' trains consume a significant portion of available number slots. The new system expands number ranges and introduces new letter prefixes designed to clearly signify a train's speed category, service type, and operational scope.

For passenger trains, the fastest services will adopt an 'X' prefix, denoting speeds above 350 km/h. Other categories include 'T' for 300 km/h trains, 'K' for 200-250 km/h services, and 'D' for trains operating at 200 km/h or below. New prefixes 'C' and 'S' will represent intercity and suburban trains respectively, while 'Z', 'N', and 'V' will be used for slower passenger services. Tourist trains will be designated with a 'Y' prefix.

Freight train numbering is also being revised. Express freight trains will now use the 'B' prefix. Other freight services will retain their unlettered numbers but will be categorized into five types, including scheduled freight trains, multimodal transport, and direct bulk cargo trains, allowing for more precise logistics tracking.

The first phase of the rollout in late November will affect conventional passenger and freight trains. The second phase in late December will cover high-speed, intercity, and suburban trains. Ticketing platforms will be updated to reflect the new numbering scheme.
