China Smartphone Shipments Down 15.4% in Q3, Huawei Grows

China's smartphone market experienced a significant decline in the third quarter of 2026, with shipments dropping 15.4% year-on-year to approximately 57.9 million units, according to preliminary data from International Data Corporation (IDC).

The downturn accelerated compared to the first half of the year, which saw a 4% decrease. The primary drivers identified were rising component and storage costs, which led to increased device prices and subsequently dampened consumer demand. This price increase forced manufacturers to adjust product configurations, particularly impacting Android vendors and smaller brands.

In a market characterized by falling volumes and rising prices, Huawei emerged as the only major vendor to achieve substantial growth, with shipments increasing 17.3% year-on-year. This performance boosted its market share to 21.1%. Apple saw a slight year-on-year decline despite a positive reception for its new models, attributed to a reduced number of devices launched this year. Honor was the only other top vendor to show sequential growth.

Looking ahead, IDC expects cost pressures to persist, keeping device prices elevated and potentially further extending consumer upgrade cycles. The market is unlikely to see a significant recovery in the fourth quarter of 2026 or much of 2027 until consumers adapt to the new pricing structure and a new replacement cycle begins.
