China targets 9,800 EFLOPS of intelligent computing capacity by 2030

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has announced a target to achieve 9,800 EFLOPS (exascale floating-point operations per second) of intelligent computing capacity by the year 2030. This goal is a key component of the nation's 15th Five-Year Plan for the information and communications industry.

The plan outlines significant investments in information infrastructure, estimating a total of RMB 3.8 trillion (approximately $520 billion USD) between 2026 and 2030. Furthermore, China intends to construct computing clusters capable of housing at least 10,000 accelerator cards, with provisions for some clusters to exceed 100,000 cards.

As of the end of June 2023, China's intelligent computing capacity stood at 2,185 EFLOPS. This figure reflects a substantial year-on-year increase of 177%. At that time, the country had 52 facilities each equipped with more than 10,000 accelerators.

This ambitious target underscores China's strategic focus on advancing its capabilities in artificial intelligence and securing a robust digital infrastructure for future technological development.
