China's aviation authorities are stepping up enforcement of regulations concerning power banks for domestic flights, a year after new rules were implemented. Increased incidents at airport security checkpoints involve passengers being prevented from boarding due to non-compliant power banks, with a focus on the required 3C certification.

Under the regulations, power banks lacking a 3C certification mark, those with unclear markings, or models subject to recall are prohibited on domestic flights. Passengers are only permitted to carry power banks in their carry-on luggage; they cannot be placed in checked baggage. A capacity limit is also in place, with devices exceeding 160 Wh strictly forbidden. Power banks between 100 Wh and 160 Wh require airline approval and are limited to two per passenger.

The stringent measures are primarily driven by safety concerns. Defective or uncertified power banks pose a fire risk within the confined environment of an aircraft cabin, where emergency response is challenging. Previously, several flights experienced diversions or emergency landings due to issues stemming from power banks.

Travelers are advised to verify their power banks' compliance before their journey. The rated energy (Wh) can be calculated using the formula: Rated Voltage (V) × Rated Capacity (Ah) / 1000. For example, a 5V, 20,000mAh power bank has a rated energy of 100 Wh, meeting the standard. Passengers encountering non-compliant devices at security may have options to have them mailed, temporarily stored, or picked up by a friend or relative.
