China Warns of "ETC Error" SMS Scam Targeting Drivers
Chinese state media CCTV has warned of a new scam circulating via SMS messages, falsely claiming vehicle ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) services are suspended or invalid. The messages direct users to click malicious links for resolution.
Chinese authorities are alerting drivers to a prevalent SMS scam that falsely claims issues with their Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) services. According to CCTV, state media, fraudulent messages are being sent to vehicle owners, stating that their ETC service has been deactivated, requires an update, or has an invalid authentication.
These messages prompt recipients to click on provided links to resolve the alleged problem. CCTV reports that these links are typically phishing sites designed to harvest sensitive personal information, including bank card numbers, passwords, and identification details.
Official channels, such as the "Jiaoguan 12123" app and the national ETC customer service hotline 95022, have confirmed that legitimate notifications regarding ETC services do not include links. Drivers are advised to be cautious and only use official platforms for inquiries about their ETC accounts.
Users can verify their ETC transaction history and billing details through their bank's official mobile applications or online banking services, as most ETC accounts are linked to bank accounts. It is recommended to contact ETC service providers or banks directly if any suspicious communication is received.
