China's summer film season in 2026 has generated over 2 billion yuan (approximately $276 million USD) in box office revenue, including pre-sales, according to network platform data cited by CCTV News.
The total box office revenue for 2026 has already exceeded 17.7 billion yuan (approximately $2.45 billion USD). The summer period featured nearly 90 Chinese and foreign films across various genres, including historical dramas, comedies, action, animation, and science fiction.
Concurrently, China's National Film Administration and the State Administration for Market Regulation have jointly issued new directives to promote diverse operations and the development of cinema culture. The stated goal is to invigorate the film industry and enhance the vibrancy of movie theaters.
The directives encourage cinemas to innovate their business models by integrating diverse offerings. This includes supporting the introduction of specialty food and beverage services, cafes, bookstores, and retail of cultural and creative products. Cinemas are also encouraged to link with other leisure and entertainment sectors, such as gaming and art exhibitions, to become dynamic cultural hubs.
Furthermore, the guidelines emphasize strengthening brand management and elevating service quality. Cinemas are encouraged to develop unique brands, create themed auditoriums, and improve customer service processes. Technological upgrades, such as supporting virtual reality film screenings, are also part of the initiative to modernize theater operations.
