China's 2026 Summer Film Box Office Exceeds 5.5 Billion Yuan

China's film industry saw its summer season box office revenue exceed 5.5 billion yuan (approximately $760 million), including pre-sales, according to reports. The total box office revenue for films in 2026 has now surpassed 21.2 billion yuan.

This summer season featured over 120 domestic and international films across various genres, including historical dramas, comedies, action, animation, and science fiction. The animated comedy "Ba Xian!"" (The Eight Immortals!) became a standout performer, surpassing 600 million yuan in ticket sales and pre-orders, marking it as a significant success of the season.

Other films have also achieved notable success. "Gong Fu Nü Zu" (Kung Fu Football Girls), written and directed by Stephen Chow, has grossed over 1.8 billion yuan. This film marks Chow's return to comedy filmmaking after a seven-year hiatus. Additionally, the science fiction adventure film "Qun Xing Shan Yao Shi" earned over 39 million yuan on its opening day, July 25. The film "Gei A Ma De Qing Shu" (A Love Letter to Grandma) continues its strong performance, with its global box office revenue exceeding 2.1 billion yuan.

The total industrial output value for China's film industry in 2026 is estimated to surpass 310 billion yuan. The sector is poised for continued growth in the coming years.
