China's Beidou Outdoor Sports Management System Launched

China has launched a new Beidou Outdoor Sports Management System to enhance safety for outdoor athletic events. The system uses Beidou satellite technology for real-time monitoring and emergency response.

18 October 2026

China has officially launched its Beidou Outdoor Sports Management System, designed to improve safety and emergency response capabilities for outdoor athletic events. The system was unveiled by the State General Administration of Sport and China Satcom Group.

The system leverages China's indigenous Beidou satellite navigation system, along with short messaging functionalities. These features enable real-time monitoring of competitions, tracking of participant routes, proactive risk warnings, and efficient coordination of emergency rescue operations, particularly in remote areas.

Developed to address the challenges of outdoor sports held in locations with poor or non-existent mobile network coverage and complex terrain, the system consists of dedicated terminals and a management platform. It collects dynamic data on athletes, equipment, and the environment. A key feature is the "one-button distress" function, allowing participants to send an emergency signal with precise location and personal data directly via the Beidou satellite network.

The system will undergo a three-month trial period. Its nationwide rollout is planned to commence in 2027. Initially, three provincial-level monitoring platforms will be established in Hebei, Xinjiang, and Zhejiang, alongside specialized platforms for water sports, mountaineering, and aviation.

This initiative is part of China's broader effort to integrate satellite technology into the sports sector, aiming to provide enhanced safety management services for the entire industry.
