China's Car Imports Fall 51% in August 2026
China imported 23,000 vehicles in August 2026, a 51% decrease year-on-year, signaling a significant downturn in the country's car import market. The total import for the first eight months also declined.
China's car imports plummeted by 51% year-on-year in August 2026, with only 23,000 vehicles entering the country, according to Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). This figure also represents a 48% decrease compared to July 2026.
For the period of January to August 2026, China's total car imports fell by 17% to 270,000 units. The share of imported cars within the passenger vehicle market dropped to 38% in August, down from an average of 49% during the first eight months of the year.
Germany was the leading exporter of vehicles to China in August, supplying 7,393 units. The United States followed with 4,972 vehicles, and Slovakia was third with 3,645 units. Looking at the broader January-August period, Japan led the export list with 129,253 cars, followed by Germany (59,183) and the U.S. (27,559).
Despite the overall decline, Cui Dongshu noted that in the luxury segment, Lexus captured a 44.6% retail share in August, an increase from 37.6% in the previous year. BMW, Porsche, and Land Rover also showed relatively stronger performance in this segment amidst the downturn.
