China's National Energy Administration announced that the national electricity market trading volume reached 3,684.8 billion kilowatt-hours in the period of January-June 2026. This figure represents a 24.2% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
In June 2026, the national electricity market handled a trading volume of 627.5 billion kilowatt-hours, marking a 20.8% year-on-year rise. The growth was primarily driven by intra-provincial transactions, which increased by 24.1% to 477.4 billion kWh. Inter-provincial and inter-regional trading saw an 11.3% rise, reaching 150.1 billion kWh.
Overall electricity consumption also saw an uptick. For the January-June period in 2026, total societal electricity consumption in China amounted to 5,099.9 billion kilowatt-hours, a 5.3% increase from the previous year. The industrial sector, including high-tech and equipment manufacturing, was a significant driver, with consumption rising by 5.1% and 9.8% respectively.
Consumption increased across most sectors, with the exception of urban and rural residential use, which decreased by 3.1% in June, though it saw a 3.1% rise over the six-month period. Notably, the electricity consumed by charging/swapping services and internet data services experienced substantial growth, exceeding 40% for both.
