China’s share of the global automotive market reached 32.1% in the first nine months of 2026, down from 35.4% in 2025, according to data released by CPCA Secretary-General Cui Dongshu. Total global vehicle sales reached 72.52 million units during this period, marking a modest 3% year-on-year growth, as the market faces cooling momentum.

While China remains the world’s largest single market, its contribution to global sales has retreated from previous peaks recorded between 2022 and 2025. The United States also saw a slight decline, accounting for 17% of global sales. Conversely, India has emerged as a key growth driver, with its global market share rising to 6.7%.

Chinese domestic manufacturers, including BYD, Geely, Chery, SAIC, and Changan, continue to perform strongly relative to global peers. Many legacy international automakers, particularly those from Europe and the U.S., have faced significant declines in market share, a trend experts attribute to the rapid transition toward electrification and shifting consumer preferences in key regions.

The industry continues to stabilize through growth in emerging markets such as Brazil and Russia, which have helped offset stagnant demand in more mature regions. Despite the contraction in China's share, domestic automakers maintain a competitive position as international rivals struggle to maintain their historical market standing.
