China's 'Great Heat' Period Begins Amidst High Temperatures and Storms

The 'Great Heat' (Dàshǔ), the hottest and sunniest period of the year according to China's traditional solar calendar, began on July 23. This period is colloquially known for its peak temperatures and falls within the 'three hot periods' (sānfú), the hottest days of the summer.

This year, much of China is experiencing not only high temperatures but also considerable rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly in southern and southeastern regions. However, weather patterns vary regionally, with some areas potentially facing drought conditions while others contend with heavy downpours.

Historically, 'Great Heat' has been associated with various traditions. These include a focus on light diets and adequate hydration, often utilizing traditional herbal concoctions or dishes like 'immortal grass' (xiāncǎo) to combat the heat. The importance of sufficient rest, particularly afternoon naps, is also emphasized to prevent 'emotional heat' (qíngxù zhōngshǔ).

Regional customs, such as sending 'Great Heat boats' (dàshǔ chuán) in the coastal regions of Zhejiang or admiring lotus flowers on lakes, are also part of this period, symbolizing hopes for protection and purity.
