China's Holiday Sees 46,000 Cars, 1.7 Million Smart Devices Exchanged
During the first three days of China's National Day holiday, consumer spending saw a boost from vehicle and smart device trade-in programs. Vehicle exchanges contributed to 7.45 billion yuan in new car sales.

China's consumer market experienced a steady and orderly performance during the recent National Day holiday, with significant activity in trade-in programs for vehicles and smart devices. Over the first three days of the holiday (October 1-3), key monitored commercial areas saw a 3.4% increase in foot traffic and a 5.3% rise in turnover compared to the previous year, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce.
The 'trade-in' initiative for automobiles resulted in the sale of 46,000 new cars, generating 7.45 billion yuan (approximately $1 billion USD) in sales. Similarly, trade-ins for home appliances accounted for 6.5 billion yuan in sales, while new purchases of digital and smart products reached 1.71 million units, contributing 4.9 billion yuan to sales.
This push for trade-ins is supported by substantial government funding. The National Development and Reform Commission, along with the Ministry of Finance, has allocated the full 250 billion yuan (approximately $34 billion USD) earmarked for consumer goods trade-in initiatives this year. A recent allocation of 62.5 billion yuan was distributed to local regions.
From January to August, these trade-in policies have driven 1.55 trillion yuan (approximately $211 billion USD) in sales. New energy vehicles, in particular, have seen their share of new passenger car retail sales exceed 60% for five consecutive months, reflecting a broader trend towards sustainable consumption.
