China's MIIT Launches 5G Roaming for Typhoon Disaster Response
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has activated 5G heterogenous network roaming to ensure communication resilience during typhoons. The service allows SIM cards to access networks from different operators.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has launched 5G heterogenous network roaming to address communication disruptions caused by recent typhoons. This measure aims to support disaster relief efforts and ensure essential communication for affected populations and command centers.
The 5G roaming service enables users with a SIM card from one operator to connect to 5G networks of other operators, enhancing service availability in areas with limited coverage. MIIT has also deployed emergency response teams and equipment, including communication vehicles and backup power, to restore damaged base stations.
Information indicates that the telecom sector has dispatched significant personnel and resources, including emergency vehicles and satellite phones. Millions of warning messages have been issued, and thousands of damaged base stations have been repaired, restoring connectivity in affected regions.
This cross-operator 5G collaboration aims to improve the overall efficiency of communication resource deployment during emergencies and accelerate network recovery times, building on previous trials in areas like Guangxi.
