China's NRTA Removes Over 13,300 AI-Modified Videos

China's National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) has released the results of its crackdown on "AI magic modification" videos for July. The regulatory body reported clearing more than 13,300 illicit videos and sanctioning over 30 accounts as part of ongoing efforts to manage online audiovisual content.

This initiative builds upon a wider campaign launched in January to address the proliferation of AI-altered content. To ensure sustained compliance, the NRTA transitioned this effort into a regularized and institutionalized long-term mechanism starting February 1.

The crackdown specifically targets AI-modified videos derived from classic literary works, historical dramas, revolutionary themes, and heroic figures. The NRTA aims to eliminate content that fundamentally distorts original works, promotes violence or vulgarity, disseminates false values, or misrepresents Chinese cultural history, thereby impacting cultural identity.

The campaign also includes the removal of unauthorized adaptations of popular animated characters aimed at children. The NRTA's stated goal is to uphold cultural integrity and prevent the spread of misinformation and harmful content online.
