China's Share of Global Auto Market Fell to 32% in Jan-Aug 2026
China's share of the global auto market stood at 32% in January-August 2026, down from 35.4% in the previous year. Global car sales saw a modest 2% increase during the period.

China's share of the global automotive market was 32% in the first eight months of 2026, a significant decrease from 35.4% in the same period of 2025. During this timeframe, China sold 20.31 million vehicles. Globally, total car sales grew by a modest 2% to 63.43 million units.
The United States held a 17.2% share, experiencing a slight decline. Meanwhile, rapid growth in emerging markets, such as India with a 20% increase and Vietnam with a 28% rise, helped offset the slowdown in the Chinese and US markets.
Cui Dongshu, Secretary General of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), noted that global single-month sales in August reached 7.719 million units, marking a mere 1% year-on-year increase and a 4.9% drop from the previous month. This indicates weakening growth momentum in the worldwide automotive sector.
According to the report, international automakers including Toyota, Hyundai-Kia, Suzuki, and Tata experienced notable declines in market share. Conversely, Chinese domestic brands like Geely, BYD, Chery, SAIC, and Changan demonstrated strong performance. The ongoing transition to electric vehicles has also contributed to the decline of some international car manufacturers.
