China's Xi'an-Chongqing High-Speed Rail Set for 2028 Completion
China's Xi'an-Chongqing high-speed railway is expected to be completed in 2028. The line will reduce travel time between Xi'an and Chongqing from approximately six hours to 2.5 hours.

The Xi'an-Chongqing high-speed railway, a key component of China's national "eight vertical and eight horizontal" high-speed rail network, is nearing a significant construction milestone with the upcoming breakthrough of the Shijiangliang Tunnel.
The 739-kilometer line, designed for speeds of 350 km/h, connects Xi'an in Shaanxi Province with Chongqing. Construction is proceeding in two phases: Xi'an to Ankang, and Ankang to Chongqing. The Shijiangliang Tunnel, located in Xuanhan County, Sichuan Province, spans nearly 12 kilometers and is considered a critical control project on the Ankang to Chongqing section.
Upon its projected completion in 2028, the railway will dramatically cut travel times. Journeys between Xi'an and Chongqing, which currently take around six hours, are expected to be reduced to approximately 2.5 hours.
The route will feature 11 stations, including the existing Chongqing West Station. The new line aims to enhance connectivity and promote economic integration between the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle and the Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration.
