Chinese Automakers Accelerate Expansion into Argentina with First Exhibition
Argentina's automotive market is opening to increased competition, marked by the country's first Chinese auto exhibition in Buenos Aires. Chinese brands have seen their market share rise significantly since late last year.

Buenos Aires, Argentina – The first-ever Chinese Auto Exhibition took place in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, signaling a shift in the nation's automotive policy towards greater openness and competition under President Javier Milei's administration. The move away from a highly protectionist stance is attracting international players.
Over 20 Chinese brands, including Geely, Chery, Great Wall, and Dongfeng, were featured at the event. This presence reflects a rapid market penetration: by August, Chinese brands had captured a 10 percent sales share in Argentina's passenger and light commercial vehicle market, a substantial increase from approximately 2 percent at the end of 2023.
A new policy implemented this year allows the duty-free import of up to 50,000 electric and hybrid vehicles, significantly boosting the entry of Chinese automakers. BYD, which entered the Argentine market in late 2025, has already become the ninth best-selling automotive brand in the country and leads electric vehicle sales in several other South American markets.
Sebastian Beato, president of Argentina's automotive dealers association (ACARA), stated that the "impressive" growth of Chinese brands is compelling the local industry to accelerate its product development and innovation. He warned that without rapid transformation, the market could be dominated by outdated models.
The increased focus on Chinese vehicles coincides with Toyota's announcement of a $1.34 billion investment to build an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Argentina, highlighting the country's efforts to reshape its automotive sector.
