Chinese consortium achieves 1,000 km data transmission over hollow-core fiber

China Telecom, YOFC, and ZTE have completed the first 1,000-kilometer bidirectional real-time data transmission test using hollow-core fiber technology.

4 November 2026

A consortium led by China Telecom’s research arm, alongside YOFC and ZTE, has verified a bidirectional, real-time data transmission link spanning 1,007 kilometers using hollow-core fiber. The system achieved a per-channel speed of 800 Gb/s, resulting in a total capacity of 128 Tb/s across extended C+L bands.

The project addressed significant technical hurdles, specifically gas absorption interference within the fiber. By refining manufacturing processes and integrating end-to-end signal balancing, the team managed to maintain stable performance without the need for high-power specialized amplifiers, relying instead on conventional hardware.

This experiment establishes a new distance record for hollow-core fiber transmissions. The results provide a technical framework for deploying high-bandwidth, low-latency backbone networks as the industry looks toward replacing traditional solid-core glass fibers.
