Chinese Dance Drama "Mulan" Plays Sold-Out Show at Lincoln Center

The Chinese dance drama "Mulan" was performed on September 18 to a sold-out audience at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York. Presented by the Ningbo Performance & Arts Group, the production has prompted significant cultural contemplation, notably from a scholar specializing in Chinese ethnic dance.

Emily Wilcox, a scholar from the College of William & Mary with extensive experience in Chinese ethnic dance, witnessed the performance multiple times. Her first encounter was during the drama's American debut in September 2023, which played in Boston and Washington, D.C. At that time, the production resonated with young Chinese-American attendees, inspiring at least one to pursue studies in Chinese ethnic dance.

However, it was in preparation for a pre-show lecture in New York that Wilcox delved deeply into the work's nuances. She traced the evolution of the Mulan story over 1,500 years and analyzed interviews with choreographers. This detailed study illuminated the drama's modern interpretations, including its portrayal of womanhood and its focus on Mulan's individual destiny rather than a traditional triumphant return.
