XICHANG, China – High in the mountains of the Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture in Sichuan province, Liao Yi-ting, a finance graduate from Peking University, is blending heritage with high-tech to cultivate an orchid empire and foster a thriving future for over 80 local women.
Liao is employing automated cultivation systems and data analytics to enhance orchid quality and yield. The initiative aims to promote local social and economic development by providing training and employment for women who have historically faced limited opportunities in the workforce.
The project has garnered support from local authorities, who view it as a model for sustainable rural development. Orchid cultivation is a significant industry in the Sichuan region, and this approach seeks to modernize the sector and improve its competitiveness.
Looking ahead, Liao Yi-ting plans to expand the operation and develop new products derived from orchid derivatives. She believes the synergy of technology and local resources can bring substantial economic benefits to the entire region.
