Australia's electric vehicle market experienced a record-breaking month in June, with seven fully electric models each exceeding 1,000 sales for the first time. Notably, all seven models were either Chinese brands or manufactured in Chinese factories. Even the top-selling Tesla Model Y is supplied from the company's Shanghai Gigafactory.

Historically, only one or two EV models, such as the Tesla Model Y, Model 3, and the BYD Sealion 7 (Sealion 7 EV), typically surpassed 1,000 monthly sales in Australia. In June, this number surged to seven, with five new Chinese models joining the previous leaders. The once-strong Model 3 dropped to 12th place.

Beyond the Tesla Model Y, the list included the BYD Sealion 7 and Atto 2, Geely EX5, Omoda Jaecoo J5, Zeekr 7X, and MG4 Urban โ€“ all predominantly Chinese brands or brands under Chinese ownership. Considering the production origin, all seven top-selling fully electric vehicles were manufactured in Chinese factories, as Tesla supplies the Australian market with vehicles from Shanghai.

Competitive pricing is a significant factor in the rapid rise of Chinese models in Australia. Three models on the list โ€“ BYD Atto 2, Omoda Jaecoo J5, and MG4 Urban โ€“ were priced below AUD $40,000. With these competitive prices and growing availability, Chinese brands are quickly capturing market share previously held by established manufacturers, particularly from Japan.
