Chinese Moonshot AI claims Kimi K3 can rival OpenAI and Anthropic

Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI has unveiled a new artificial intelligence model, Kimi K3, claiming it can rival top American firms like OpenAI and Anthropic.

The model boasts 2.8 trillion parameters, a key measure of AI scale and processing power. Its full capabilities in coding, knowledge work, and reasoning will be accessible when it is released as an open-source model on July 27. This release marks the world's first open-source model in the three-trillion-parameter class, allowing external developers to freely download, run, and customize it.

The launch arrives at a sensitive time for the global tech sector, following US government restrictions on Anthropic's models due to cybersecurity concerns. While those restrictions have since been lifted, the event highlights the US view of advanced AI software as critical national infrastructure.

Moonshot AI, backed by tech giants Alibaba and Tencent, has rapidly emerged as a leader in China's generative AI ecosystem. The company stated that K3 is its "most capable flagship model to date." Unlike proprietary US systems, Kimi K3's open nature allows for global customization for advanced reasoning and complex software development.

Third-party evaluations indicate Kimi K3 performs on par with leading US models. Its open-source nature could significantly disrupt Silicon Valley's commercial models, despite the substantial computing power required for local operation. The announcement immediately impacted the share prices of Moonshot's domestic competitors.
