Chinese Open AI Models Challenge Western Companies' Business Models

Chinese open-weight frontier AI models had by mid-2026 nearly matched the intelligence and performance of leading Western models, posing a significant threat to the business models of U.S. AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, according to Fast Company.

Leading Western models are closed, meaning their parameters, or weights, are kept secret. These weights are enormously expensive to develop and are a primary factor in model quality. AI companies guard them as trade secrets, offering model capabilities through API access, where customers pay for intelligence without needing their own infrastructure or maintenance.

However, open-weight models from Chinese labs such as Alibaba, DeepSeek, and Moonshot AI have been improving rapidly. As they are freely available, many companies are beginning to build their AI systems on top of these models to avoid the high costs of closed-model APIs. Businesses can also host these models in their own private clouds, enhancing data security and allowing for customization.

Chinese AI labs benefit from the development of open models by potentially gaining global contributions to improvements. Widely adopted open models can also increase demand for China's own AI ecosystem, including chips, cloud platforms, and developer tools. This strategy mirrors the difference between Apple's iOS and Google's Android in the hardware market.
