Chinese platforms remove 13,000 AI-modified videos amid crackdown

Authorities in China have intensified oversight of AI-altered video content, citing the preservation of cultural integrity and copyright laws.

24 October 2026

Major video streaming platforms in China removed approximately 13,000 videos and penalized over 30 user accounts during September as part of a campaign against unauthorized AI video modification. State broadcaster CCTV reported that the initiative targets content that alters classic films, historical subjects, and cultural icons, labeling such practices as detrimental to national heritage.

Regulators differentiate between traditional fan-made creative works and AI-generated distortions. While the former is viewed as an expression of engagement with original content, the latter is criticized for undermining the integrity of classic works and potentially violating intellectual property rights.

Starting February 1, 2026, authorities will implement a permanent regulatory framework to manage AI content. The National Radio and Television Administration has directed platforms to enforce stricter daily monitoring to identify and remove content deemed offensive or culturally destructive.
