San Francisco – The Actuate conference, focused on robotics and artificial intelligence, drew approximately 1,500 investors, entrepreneurs, and engineers in August. Despite significant interest, the number of robots on display was notably lower than anticipated. The event, hosted by robotics software company Foxglove, underscored the sector's growing hurdles, including hardware shortages and data acquisition challenges, even as investment flows accelerate.

A central theme at the conference was "Physical AI," referring to AI systems capable of interacting with and acting upon the real world. This domain is attracting substantial capital, with global robotics startup funding exceeding $15 billion in 2025 and remaining strong into 2026. Foxglove CEO Adrian Macneil indicated that the primary investment focus currently lies in the production and procurement of training data for robots, as physical robots require real-world data, unlike their internet-based AI counterparts.

Among the few hardware manufacturers present, China-based Unitree Robotics emerged as a point of interest. The company experienced a significant stock price increase following its public listing. However, during robot combat demonstrations at the event, performance issues such as missed attacks and operational errors were observed.

Industry development is also being impacted by U.S. regulatory actions. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has implemented restrictions on new foreign-made advanced robot equipment. While some American manufacturers view this as protection for domestic industries, many startups and researchers fear that these limitations could hinder access to affordable overseas hardware and slow down the robotics sector's growth in the U.S. Sebastian Thrun, a founder of Google's self-driving project Waymo, and Fred Parietti, CEO of Multiply Labs, have both criticized the FCC's stance, citing their reliance on Chinese robot components and a lack of alternatives.
