Chinese Scientist Wang Jinsong Awarded William Nordberg Medal, Asteroid Named

Chinese researcher Wang Jinsong was awarded the prestigious William Nordberg Medal at the 46th Scientific Assembly of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) in Florence, Italy, on August 3. He is the first Chinese scientist to receive this honor since its inception in 1988.

The William Nordberg Medal recognizes outstanding achievements and contributions in the application of space science. In conjunction with the award, an asteroid has been named after Wang. He currently serves as the Director of the National Satellite Meteorological Center (National Space Weather Monitoring and Warning Center) and Chief Designer of the Fengyun meteorological satellite program.

Wang has been instrumental in establishing China's national space weather operational system and advancing the Fengyun meteorological satellite program. His work has led to technological breakthroughs in solar imaging, auroral observation, and space weather forecasting. He spearheaded the development of China's first operational space weather numerical forecasting system and an AI model.

Under Wang's leadership, China has become one of the few countries, alongside the United States, with comprehensive space weather monitoring capabilities. Their technology is widely applied in major space projects such as the Beidou navigation system and the Chang'e lunar exploration program. Their space weather services have received international recognition from organizations like the World Meteorological Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization.
