The three astronauts—Zhu Yangzhu, Zhang Zhiyuan, and Li Jiaying—completed the collection of experimental rice samples as part of an ongoing study into the genetic stability and environmental adaptability of rice across multiple generations under microgravity conditions.

The experiment, titled "Study of Molecular Mechanisms for Regulation of Multi-Generational Genetic Stability and Environmental Adaptability of Space Rice," aims to achieve a closed-loop cultivation cycle for rice in space, from seed to seed. This objective is crucial for future long-duration space missions where in-situ food production could become essential for astronaut sustenance.

The Shenzhou 23 mission, which launched on May 24, carried rice seeds and other experimental materials. While previous experiments in 2022 successfully demonstrated a complete rice life cycle from germination to seed harvest on the station, this current endeavor pushes the research further by aiming for a two-generation cultivation cycle in space.

The experiment utilizes two types of rice: one derived from seeds previously harvested in space and grown on Earth, and another from ordinary Earth-based seeds. The setup allows for both sexual reproduction, where mature seeds are collected for a second generation, and regenerative rice cultivation, where the plant regrows from its roots. The goal is to compare the adaptability of these methods in the space environment and investigate potential genetic advantages for rice previously exposed to space.
