Chipotle COO Identifies Four Key Traits for Leadership Promotions
Chipotle's Chief Operating Officer Jason Kidd prioritizes four specific traits when promoting employees, with the company favoring internal candidates for over 90% of restaurant management roles.

Chipotle's Chief Operating Officer Jason Kidd emphasizes distinct qualities when selecting employees for leadership promotions. Last year, nearly 23,000 employees were promoted, and the company heavily favors internal candidates for crucial roles.
Kidd frequently visits Chipotle locations weekly, engaging with regional teams to identify potential leaders. His criteria include employees who demonstrate strong team collaboration and care for colleagues, individuals who take full ownership of outcomes, those capable of anticipating problems rather than merely reacting, and staff with robust problem-solving abilities.
"At the end of the day, we run a people business," Kidd told Business Insider. "So you need to make sure you take care of your people." He stated a preference for proactive individuals who can foresee challenges over those who only address immediate issues.
With Chipotle planning to open hundreds of new restaurants, the focus on internal leadership development remains critical. CEO Scott Boatwright has previously asserted that "the answers are in the restaurants," advocating for direct engagement with employees to accurately diagnose operational challenges.
