Cholera vaccination campaign launched in Mozambique

Mozambique's Ministry of Health has commenced a six-day emergency vaccination campaign to combat the spread of cholera in the aftermath of Cyclone Idai. The initiative aims to protect thousands, particularly in areas with compromised water and sanitation systems.

At the 7 de Abril Primary School in Inhamayabwe village, Dondo district, health workers are overseeing vaccination points. Children are administered the oral cholera vaccine, with over 1200 volunteers supporting the health authorities in this effort.

Cholera poses a significant public health threat, with Mozambique reporting over 2,430 cases and 3 deaths since the outbreak was declared on March 27. The vaccines, arriving from the global cholera vaccine stockpile, are being prioritized for the highest-risk populations.

Mozambique's Minister of Health, Dr. Nazira Abdula, has acknowledged the scale of the campaign and the crucial support from international partners, including WHO, UNICEF, and Doctors Without Borders. Dr. Djamila Cabral, head of the WHO office in Mozambique, emphasized the vital role of local authorities and community engagement in the success of the vaccination drive.
