Cision and Chemical Engineering students at Lund University's Faculty of Engineering (LTH) have initiated a project to significantly increase the methane content in biogas without requiring extra biological input.

The concept involves methanation of carbon dioxide. Instead of removing the CO2, which constitutes 40-50 percent of raw biogas, it reacts with renewable hydrogen to form additional methane. The goal is to produce vehicle-fuel-grade gas with a methane concentration of 97-98 percent.

The project utilizes Catator's technology and is being carried out by LTH's chemical engineering students. This process aims to transform a waste stream into a resource and supports the European Union's objectives for scaling up biomethane production.

Successful implementation could substantially boost the energy output of existing biogas facilities and enhance the production of renewable fuels, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
