Pet behaviourist Hannah Molloy has identified five key moments during the Halloween season when the spooky festivities can become overwhelming for household pets.

Molloy, who also serves as a pet behaviourist for Agria Pet Insurance, has compiled a "stress checklist" to guide owners in recognizing signs that the season is becoming too frightening for their dogs. She notes that while searches for 'Halloween dog costumes' spike annually, indicating owners' desire to include pets, costumes are merely one potential stressor.

According to Molloy, pets can experience fear due to various factors, including loud noises, unfamiliar people in costumes, or disruptions to their normal routines. She advises owners to closely observe their pets' behaviour for signs of stress, such as excessive yawning, lip licking, or unusual withdrawal.

During celebrations, providing pets with a safe space to retreat is crucial if they feel uncomfortable. A quiet room or a designated bed can offer a refuge from loud noises and the commotion of guests. The sounds of fireworks and firecrackers, often associated with outdoor parties and trick-or-treating, can also be particularly distressing for animals.

Molloy emphasizes that a pet's well-being should be the priority. Owners should carefully consider how they involve their pets in Halloween activities and be prepared to forgo certain events if they cause significant anxiety for the animal.
